  • Car Jumper has become an alcoholic, a pariah and an outlaw all in the same episode... am I the only one excited to see where he goes from here? This is a great opportunity for character growth.

  • MAYBE WE SHOULD DISABLE THE COMMENTS SO NOBODY EVER HAS TO READ AN OPINION OTHER THAN THEIR OWNS JESUS CHRIST Anyway, I am happy. Happy that channel 101 and the people involved are in my life and I love you guys. Raffa, if I tried to car jump I would end up badly hurt or dead - not because I'm a girl ;) but because im a lazy fat piece of trash. ;) ;)

  • See, this is why I love Channel 101. I also came away from this episode thinking that it came off as uncomfortably sexist. I say "came off" because I know Dave and Spencer and I've seen no evidence that they are rabid misogynists. Channel 101 is a place to succeed and, just as often, make mistakes. 10+ years in, no one has definitively cracked the code because it's not something that can be cracked. At the risk of overstating things, Channel 101 is unique because it's one of the last corners of the internet where you're forced to face your mistakes. Whether you're canceled or you drop from 1st to 5th or people feel comfortable to express their concerns like they've expressed for this episode. It's not yelling into a void, this is a community that listens and adjusts. 99.8% of the online community is strictly about doing. Channel 101 is about learning.

  • Dave, you're doing it wrong. You don't privately reach out to people, especially people you know and respect, you just put that shit on the net, dawg!

  • Haha also that should say "Mike Rose's Agent Character" -- the human Mike Rose had nothing to do with the fate of the Sheryl character.

  • Check out this sick-ass episode of Car Jumper where female characters car jump: http://www.channel101.com/episode/1369

  • Also, I've reached out to some of you, but I want to put it on permanent unedit-able comment-record that I'm regretful that anyone walked away from watching this show feeling sad about it, or sad about Channel 101, or sad about the world. This was a sloppy episode. You could call it a bad episode, if you wanted to. That's up to you. I don't want to take anything away from people who liked it and the people who worked hard to make it happen. I love making this show. I didn't think we were making any concrete statement on sexism or misogyny - we certainly weren't trying to. We wanted Car-Jumper to get swept up in a PR crisis, make some bad decisions, and suffer for it, hurting others in the process. Maybe we shouldn't have gone near a topic like sexism if we weren't going to say anything about it. The Sheryl character falls off the car because of hasty and bad decisions on the part of Car-Jumper and Mike Rose, not on the basis of her sex. That fact could've been made clearer, and that's on us for sloppy storytelling. In the world of this show, we treat "car-jumping" as this nearly-impossible task that maybe only Car-Jumper (or those being guided by Car-Jumper) has been able to accomplish. Of course in reality, there are talented female stunt people who can jump between moving cars better and faster than we would ever have the balls to attempt.

I appreciate the comments and conversation happening here. Don't want our dumb show to perpetuate any misogynistic bullshit. I want to be on the "cut that shit out" side of this fight, and plan to take closer care on this kind of thing in the future.

  • Dobie, it's cuz we don't self-cancel like some of them other fools. The audience, and whoever out there wants to make shows to cancel us, get to decide when Car-Jumper ends.

  • There's no right way. This may be the series that never ends.
    Jun 02, 2014 at 7:36am
  • Just out of curiosity, Dobie, what's the RIGHT way to take that?
    Jun 02, 2014 at 7:32am
  • It's twenty-five good!
    Jun 02, 2014 at 7:07am
  • Folks, please don't take this the wrong way, but... HOW THE FUCK did this series go eighteen episodes?! Is this really going to top Everything? I mean it's good, but eighteen good?
    Jun 02, 2014 at 6:46am
  • Raffa is on it.

  • (and julia, about the bechdel test, i do think it is important and interesting, i just disagree that the joke in the episode was making fun of it. the way i saw it, the joke was making fun of the idea that simply passing the bechdel test can make something not be sexist)
    Jun 02, 2014 at 12:32am
  • sorry kelsy! i didn't mean to make you sad for being upset about this. and now that i was thinking more about it, i do have to agree that it was pretty dumb not to have her car-jump in the ending. it felt like the first 4 minutes was all about sexism and then in the last minute it switched to being about car jumper drinking problems. which meant the whole car-jumper-is-sexist plot didn't get resolved... yeah, i can see how that could come off badly now. i'm usually pretty sensitive to this stuff too, but i didn't feel bad while watching, because i just assume everyone in channel 101 are like the nicest people in the world and would never be actually sexist.

  • Regardless of whether or not the Bechdel test seems silly or unimportant to you, it is crucial in terms of realistic representation and a gradual shift in attitude. It's empowering. And I don't see the point in making fun of it.

  • Word. I love 101 too. That's the only reason I'd give enough of a shit to comment about this.
It just seemed unnecessarily belittling for no real reason. Feeling belittled or trivialized in a creative community that you normally feel completely at home in is something worth bringing up. Anyway, let's all continue the collective Steve Agee jerk sesh.

  • Also my previous comment is full of typos and also I still love 101 and everyone involved.

  • No! Don't fuck Julia and wade! I get it! This was the first screening I went to where I ended up feeling like crap. Because of this episode. And saying "oh lighten up! It's just a silly comedy" isn't an argument. Replace the woman in this with a black person. Where car jumper says "black people can't do what I do!" And the black person dies because they were too scared." Where's the joke? It's not cool. And I know none of my friends in 101 are hateful women-hating monsters. I think it's more that some of my male friends don't understand and get defensive. They don't get why women are so upset because they would never harass a woman. Because they respect women. But that doesn't change the fact that every female I know has been sexually harassed in some way or anther. Just because they're not personally responsible doesn't mean that it's not a huge problem. I don't want to feel like an idiot for being upset about this! Please never make me feel like I'm an asshole or an overreacting jerk for caring about this! And if this episode was just satire about media frenzies then don't make the girl car jumper die because she is too scared to jump. Why the hell didn't you have her jump confidently and then die because of car jumpers bottle? It was such a silly choice that hurt my feelings. That's all. I don't know why I'm trying to get to the root of this and bringing up other stuff. Really my point is usually my friends and everyone in channel 101 makes funny awesome content and his episode made me sad. That's all

  • Finally! Some new Steve Agee stuff to jack it to.
    Jun 01, 2014 at 10:17pm
  • you guys this is a 5 minute show about a guy who jumps from one moving car to another moving car. it's all silly, it's all ironic and purposefully over the top. as a woman, i didn't even consider anyone could be offended by this. i just thought it was really funny.

also, i interpreted the bechdel test part as not making fun of the test itself, but making fun of the idea that simply succeeding the test doesn't make anything less sexist, since it's obvious mike rose and the car jumping crew are sexist and passing the bechdel test doesn't change anything. which i thought was pretty clever.

  • screw Wade and Julia, this was amazing. Also, I masturbate to the sound of my own voice
    Jun 01, 2014 at 6:22pm
  • I agree with Wade. This was an incredible bummer to watch. Making fun of the Bechdel Test, especially in the Channel 101 community, which is comprised of mostly men, is pretty fucking confusing and lame. The majority of Channel 101 shows don't even pass that test, which only furthers the NEED for awareness of that issue. You seem to be saying it's a pointless endeavor by showing that two women wouldn't even have anything interesting to say to each other when put on the spot. This is just such a shame especially since Car Jumper doesn't learn anything in the end except not to litter.
You guys usually make such interesting, clever content. These were just very odd choices.
    Jun 01, 2014 at 4:55pm
  • Okay, so your main character is a misogynist who not only thinks women can't car jump but is actually proven right when co-jumper hesitates to make the jump and ends up dead(?) even though he can easily do it while drunk. I'm as bummed out as a storyteller as much as I am a feminist.
